The Gasworks Growers and Craft Market
One of the projects Dream South D has been collaborating on recently is the amazing community-driven Gasworks Growers and Craft Market. This market is a non-profit initiative based in South Dunedin, and has been set up to bring people in the community together, with a focus on sustainability and community resilience. One of the main drivers in the creation of the market was to encourage people to grow their own fruit, vegetables and other plants, and to provide a place where their produce could be sold or shared amongst the market communty. The market family has now grown with so many great groups collaborating and supporting the market in different ways, including the Dunedin Gasworks Museum, SuperGrans Dunedin, The Free Shop Otepoti, Stitch Kitchen, the Seedling and the Dunedin Vegetable Growers Club as well as many other community members, stall holders, food trucks and small businesses. It's really blooming!

The first market was held in October, and was a fantastic success, especially coinciding as it did with the Dunedin Gasworks 160th birthday weekend and the Ōtepoti Dunedin Heritage Festival. Since then, there’s been two other markets, including a lovely Christmas night event that was really well supported and even had a Santa Grotto!

The Gasworks Market has a really strong kaupapa to be as supportive and accessible to everyone in the commuity as possible, so each market has a set number of stalls availabe for free to community or fundraising groups, as well as to children selling plants or fruit and veges. And for crafters or growers trying to support their hobby, half stalls only cost $3! The next market will be run alongside the South Dunedin Street Festival on McBride St, starting at 10am Saturday 16 March, and other markets are scheduled throughout the year, alternating between day and night, some with special events or themes. There’s a recycled/repurposed fasion show planned for October, and another Christmas night market in December, so it’s looking like a great first year for this new market. For more info or to book a stall, have a look at the Gasworks Market Facebook page or email Chris and Kim.
See you at the next one!
