Spring Clean and E-Waste
This March we ran another waste collection day for South Dunedin residents—encouraging locals to declutter responsibly while connecting with services that support reuse and repair.
We provided three skips for general waste, and partnered with Comp2tech and Cargill Enterprises for e-waste collection. Comp2tech were onsite, helping sort and salvage useful tech for refurbishment, chatting with participants about their mahi, and even repairing items on the spot. Cargills handled the safe disposal of non-salvageable electronics. A reuse zone allowed good-quality items to be taken home for repurposing—giving pre-loved goods a second life.
The event attracted 64 carloads, filling over two skips and diverting 561 kg of e-waste (including 10 TVs) from landfill. Many thanks to our volunteers who kept things humming, with traffic control and warm community engagement. The fine summer weather helped too!
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive: “Great initiative, thanks so much” and “I didn’t want these TVs going to landfill” were just a few of the many kind words shared. It was great to forge new local partnerships and a genuine sense of community around the kaupapa of waste reduction and reuse.
