From Space to Place!

What is happening:

The local South Dunedin community told us they wanted a greener, more welcoming main street with a place where people can stop, meet, and connect. Thanks to funding from Te Tari Taiwhenua Department of Internal Affairs, our community-led development partnership, that vision is becoming a reality.

We're giving Lorne Street a fresh new look with:

  • Improved and feature lighting

  • New, accessible seating and street furniture designed by Zeal Steel

  • A wheelchair-accessible drinking fountain

  • New fencing, a shelter, and vibrant planting

  • More green spaces to bring life and colour to the street

Together, these improvements will create a welcoming community space where people can relax, catch up with friends, and enjoy local events.

The design celebrates South Dunedin's unique environmental and industrial heritage while looking to the future. With existing light poles being reused and street furniture repurposed wherever possible, giving new life to what we already have, while creating a place the whole community can be proud of.

What to Expect:

While we transform Lorne Street into a vibrant new space, the street will be closed or have restricted access. The work is expected to take approximately 4–6 weeks.

Habitat Restorations Aotearoa has designed the concept plan, the Dunedin City Council has approved the project, and SGC Services will deliver it.

We appreciate your patience while this exciting transformation takes place. The result will be a greener, brighter, and welcoming place for everyone to enjoy.
