Did you Know? Dots
Building from the strengths of our community—sharing stories that connect us to our places and to each other.
Did You Know? Dots - the project is all about celebrating the people and places that make South Dunedin special, strengthening community identity, and creating a sense of pride of place.
What are the Dots?
The “dots” are small signs dotted around South Dunedin. Each one shares a bite-sized piece of history about South Dunedin - a notable person, a historical building, a local first, or a tasty bit of trivia.
This project is being rolled out in two phases;
Phase One:
These initial dots will serve as inspiration and conversation starters, and will highlight stories like:
The birthplace of New Zealand’s first purpose-built kindergarten
The rope walk at Donaghy’s, New Zealand’s last surviving one
The iconic Dunedin Gasworks
Phase Two:
Local schools, kindergartens, community groups, businesses, and everyday residents are invited to create their own dots sharing their stories, their places. We hope to add another 20 dots by the end of the year from public feedback.
We will also be looking at turning this into a walking/interactive history trail and some guided events later in the year with the Ōtepoti Dunedin Heritage Festival this October.
This project is all about reminding ourselves (and our visitors) of the rich, diverse, and quirky character that defines South Dunedin.
