Quarterly Update

December 2024

Kia ora koutou and welcome to the quarterly update from Dream South D, a community-led development project in the heart of South Dunedin! We hope this newsletter finds you well, and beginning to enjoy a bit of that seasonal cheer.

At Dream South D, we’re currently in the middle of a fabulous little project to celebrate the festive season in our community - Christmas on King Edward St - and it’s quickly become one of our favourites! It’s been a real joy to see how the local South Dunedin community groups and businesses have taken this project to heart, and a lovely way for us to wind up the year.

A quick summary of some of our recently completed projects:

• Play Parks: these were a fantastic success, and we really enjoyed the collaboration with Sport Otago and Whānau Awhina Plunket, as well as our BBQ wranglers, Albion Cricket Club, Southern Rugby Football Club, Southern Magpies Softball Club and Fulton Hogan. We have one more event to go in January, rescheduled due to the huge rains in October

• Garden Network: connecting South Dunedin community gardens and their people, to share resources, raise awareness and support sustainability - a practical way to help build resilience and connection in South D

• Gasworks Market: our longest running collaboration finished with the amazing Remake Revolution fashion competition - we were so impressed with the results (see image above)! The final Market for 2024 will be on at 5pm, Monday 23 December at the Dunedin Gasworks Museum

• Fright Night on Ice: we were overwhelmed by the incredible response to our Halloween event at the Dunedin Ice Stadium - and the photobooth was just about run off its feet with kids in the coolest, spookiest costumes!

Projects we’ll be working on 2025:

• South D Spring Clean: due to high demand, a repeat of the super well-attended free community skip days we ran last winter

• Lorne St: rejuvenation of this area to bring more life into it

• Did You Know? Dots: fun facts about South Dunedin characters and history, on street signs around the area

• Distance markers along John Wilson Dr: whether you’re out for a run, walking the dog, or biking or scootering with the kids, these markers will make it easier to track how far you’ve travelled along this iconic stretch of road
